Programs & Service

The San Fernando Valley Alumnae Chapter works to continue the legacy of our Founders through our commitment to public service.  Our programs are designed to help the community in which we live and work side by side with our neighbors to help improve our community.  Our programs are designed to parallel our Sorority’s Five-Point Programmatic Thrust and Social Action initiatives.  We welcome you to join us in any of our activities.

Delta Sigma Theta Sorority’s Five-Point Programmatic Thrust:

Economic Development

The San Fernando Valley Alumnae Chapter provides programs dedicated to:

  • Financial and Estate Planning workshops.
  • Donating goods in support of Penny Lane and the Black Infant Health Program.
  • Providing meals to community members in need through our partnership with The San Fernanado Valley Rescue Mission and Penny Lane.
  • Providing clothing, blankets and other essentials to community members in need through our partnership with Bridge to Home (Santa Clarita and Sylmar shelters).
  • Volunteering at Help the Children Food Bank.

Educational Development

The San Fernando Valley Alumnae Chapter provides programs dedicated to:

  • Mentoring young ladies between the ages of 14 – 18 through our GEMS (Growing and Empowering Myself Successfully) program.  The GEMS program provides seminars on scholarship, study skills, interviewing techniques, college planning and preparation, and etiquette.  We also provide many community service opportunities for the young ladies who participate in the program.

G.E.M.S. Application: Delta GEMS Application (2018 – 2019)

  • Awarding scholarships to graduating high school seniors who plan to continue their education at a 4 year college or university.  Applications are accepted from January – April annually with the scholarship being awarded in June.
  • Hosting an annual African American College Planning Conference to promote higher education and exposure to Historically Black Colleges and Universities.

International Awareness and Involvement

The San Fernando Valley Alumnae Chapter provides programs dedicated to:

  • Providing monthly donations to the Mocha Club that provides funding to build wells in Africa.
  • Providing donations to support the Butterfly House which is a school in Kenya through I Can Fly International.

Physical Awareness and Mental Health

The San Fernando Valley Alumnae Chapter provides programs dedicated to:

  • Participating in the Los Angeles AIDS walk.
  • Providing an annual Community Baby Shower to mothers in the San Fernando Valley through our partnership with a local agency.
  • Participating in the Los Angeles Revlon Run/Walk.
  • Participating in the Autism Walk.
  • Participating in World AIDS Day.

Political Awareness and Involvement

The San Fernando Valley Alumnae Chapter provides programs dedicated to:

  • Conducting annual voter registration drives in the San Fernando Valley and other areas in the greater Los Angeles community. Please see below for voter education information regarding the upcoming November 6, 2018 Midterm Election.  Remember, your vote counts.

Certified List of CA Candidates

  • Participating in Delta Days at the Nation’s Capital, Delta Days in Sacramento and Delta Day in Los Angeles where we speak to our representatives about issues that affect our nation, state, and community.
  • Collaborating with the Chatsworth Branch of the Los Angeles Public Library to host documentary screenings and community discussions on social action issues.
  • Hosting independent film screenings on various social awareness topics designed to facilitate and promote discussion.
